Florida State-Approved Traffic School Programs

Tri-County Human Services offers Florida-approved Driver Improvement Courses designed to help drivers satisfy court requirements, fulfill Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) requirements, improve driving habits, and work toward maintaining their driving privileges.

Our Driver Improvement Programs include:

  • Basic Driver Improvement (BDI)
  • Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI)
  • Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI)

Basic Driver Improvement (BDI)

4-Hour Traffic School Course
The Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course is designed for drivers who have received a minor moving violation and elect to attend traffic school to avoid points, insurance increases, or license suspension.

Common Reasons for Taking BDI

  • First-time moving violation
  • Court-approved traffic school election
  • Point reduction eligibility
  • Insurance discount eligibility (check with your insurance provider)

The Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI) course is intended for drivers who require additional traffic safety education due to multiple violations, court requirements, or FLHSMV actions..

Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI)

12-Hour Advanced Traffic School
The Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) course is designed for drivers facing license suspension, habitual traffic offender designation, or reinstatement requirements.

Common Reasons for Taking ADI

  • Court order
  • FLHSMV requirement
  • License reinstatement
  • Habitual Traffic Offender (HTO) designation
  • Excessive license points

You may be required to complete ADI if you have accumulated:

  • 12 points within 12 months
  • 18 points within 24 months
  • 24 points within 36 months

Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS)

The Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course is a 6-hour online program required for individuals under the age of 18 seeking a Florida learner’s permit.

Beginning July 1, 2025, Florida law requires first-time drivers under 18 to complete the DETS course before becoming eligible for a learner’s permit. The DETS course replaces the former 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) requirement for teen drivers.

Who Needs the DETS Course?

The DETS course is generally required for:

  • First-time drivers under the age of 18
  • Teens applying for a Florida learner’s permit
  • New drivers who must satisfy Florida’s driver education requirement before permit eligibility
